On Leaving the Country
Drifting over the landscape
Schools, churches, homes fade
To train sets and to dollhouses and then to specks
Before they are lost beneath the clouds
I journey up:
Past smog and car horns,
Past worries and deadlines,
Past responsibility,
And suddenly,
Past regret
Rising and turning I travel
Into dark of clouds
A shaky moment in the wind
And then,
Sunshine
On Leaving the Country
