On the Mediterranean
-Anne Angel, In Sunshine or in Shadow (c) 2022

Standing sinking in the sand,
Centuries washing my feet, I look out
And think: Phoenicians, Romans, Greeks
Have touched what I touch now. Wow.
Across the expanse, a mere hundred miles,
Africa’s dream lies out of reach,
But the air that kisses my hair, my cheek
Came from there and I am here,
And this is that sea and this is me.

The feeling flickers and I let it die
The forced remembrance of what I know
Steals the filling from this slice of time.
I close my mind.
The full moon rises over the water
The stars in the depths outshine the town
The sand seduces my weary feet
The caress begins, sensation wins
This is my history.

The moment begs me to close my fist
To hear I think I need it.
But no. I close my eyes and twirl
Wave to the waves, palms up to the palms.
With a smile, it soon will be gone.
For I know the calling of this voice
From snowfall, piano, and dream.
Today that love speaks from the shore
And as for tomorrow… we’ll see.
